Accessibility statement for HMCTS Access
This accessibility statement applies to HMCTS Access which allows users to securely sign in to online Civil, Family and Tribunal Services, available at https://hmcts-access.service.gov.uk/. It is part of the wider GOV.UK website which has its own separate accessibility statement. This service’s statement does not cover the other individual HMCTS services.
This website is run by HM Courts and Tribunals. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website, so we have designed it to be accessible. For example, that means you should be able to:
- change colours, contrast levels and fonts using browser or device settings
- zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
- navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
- navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
- listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)
We have also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.
AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.
How accessible this website is
We know some parts of the journey are not fully accessible. Our service includes links to external websites in order to provide Single Sign-On for HMCTS staff and judicial users. While we aim to link to accessible and reliable services, we cannot guarantee the accessibility of any external websites, and we are aware of the following issues:
- SSO (single sign on) screens lack descriptive alt text on organisation logos for screen reader users
- eJudiciary (single sign on) screen has a complex background image that lacks descriptive alt text and includes an image of text that cannot be resized

Technical information about this website’s accessibility
HMCTS is committed to making its websites accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.
Compliance status
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.
Non-accessible content
The content listed below is non-compliant for the following reasons.
Third Party Content
The Single Sign-On (SSO) links for HMCTS staff and judicial users direct you to third-party pages that are not fully accessible:
- Organisation logos on SSO (single sign on) screens lack descriptive alt text, so screen reader users may not understand which organisation they are signing into or whether they are on the correct login page. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.1.1 (Non-text Content).
- The eJudiciary SSO (single sign on) screen background uses a complex image of text that lacks descriptive alt text, so screen reader users and screen magnification users who need to resize text may not be able to perceive this information. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criteria 1.1.1 (Non-text Content) and 1.4.5 (Images of Text).
What we’re doing to improve accessibility
We have relayed the known accessibility issues identified on the SSO (single sign on) login screens with the relevant team that owns those pages and continue to track progress on this.
This website is continually tested using accessibility automated tests and basic manual and assistive technology checks. Any new features which are introduced will also be tested internally or with the support of the internal HMCTS accessibility testing team.
